San Antonio Spurs: Ex-NBA Coach of the Year Warns NBA About Victor Wembanyama
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret Victor Wembanyama showed how immensely talented he is during his first year in the league. But for former Coach of the Year George Karl, the San Antonio Spurs rookie is going to cause trouble in the NBA for years to come.

After a slow start to his season, Wembanyama picked up the pace and showed a glimpse of his true potential. In a game against the Kevin Durant-led Phoenix Suns last year, the Spurs rookie dropped 38 points on 57 percent shooting from the field, 10 rebounds, and two blocks. His performance against an experienced squad helped San Antonio get the 132-121 win over Phoenix.

From there, Wembanyama got more minutes to play on the court. Even though there were several challenges along the way, including the lack of an experienced point guard and the Spurs losing streak throughout the regular season, the French star remained consistent on both ends of the court.

After playing through 71 games, Wembanyama finished the regular season with 21.4 points 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks on a nightly basis. And even though he lost the Defensive Player of the Year to Minnesota Timberwolves’ big man Rudy Gobert, he still won Rookie of the Year for a stellar performance in his first campaign in the NBA.

Former NBA Coach George Karl Claims San Antonio Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama Is Going To Be a Problem

Even while the regular season was still ongoing, Wembanyama has been praised by various personalities for showcasing a skillset and attitude way above most players his age in the league. Among those who gave their most recent take on the Spurs’ star is former NBA head coach George Karl, which can be seen on his official X account.

“Teams like the Nuggets and Wolves better get what they can in the West the next couple years. Cause Wemby is coming and his teams will soon be an unstoppable force,” Karl tweeted.

At this point in time, the Nuggets and Timberwolves are heavy-favorites to reach the NBA Finals from the Western Conference. Karl’s claim that Wembanyama can dislodge those two teams in the future is one massive endorsement for the San Antonio star.

With a couple of months more before the regular season returns, Wembanyama has an opportunity to come back better. If he does, expect most teams in the league to take notice of this season’s Rookie of the Year winner.
